Initially recognized as El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, San Jose was founded on November 29, 1777. It was the chief town in the Spanish colony of Nueva California, which was later on called Alta California. This farming city used to support Spanish military installations at San Francisco and Monterey. It was the first capital of California after it attained the statehood in 1850.
